The origin of Paro Taktsang is shrouded in the mists of history back to 1692 when a temple complex was first built by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgaye around a Taktsang (‘tiger’s Liar’ in the Tibetan Language)- one of thirteen such Himalayan Caves that were used by Guru Padma Sambhava for meditation.  Legend has it that he reached the Paro valley of Bhutan atop a flying tigress and meditated in the cave for exactly three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours and emerged in eight incarnated forms to cleanse the place of evil spirits to preserve the integrity of Buddhist teachings.

The architectural appearance of the Taktsang Monastery reflects the charms of Buddhist culture. The temple complex has white buildings with golden roofs. consisting of the 4 main temples and several dwellings. Steps are carved in the rock which interconnect all the buildings. The interior design of the temple impresses with its luxurious beauty: gold-plated dome and flickering lights that are illuminating golden idols. In the hall of Thousand Buddhas, which is carved into the rock, a large statue of a tiger is located, as the symbol of Paro Taktsang because of the legend. Hence, the monastery is also commonly known as the Tiger’s Nest.

How to reach there?

The valley is a trekker’s paradise with its lush green forests and breathtaking views, one will never feel tired or fatigued and the only sounds you can hear at  Taktsang are the murmurs of the wind and water and the chanting of mantras. You will be welcomed with the most charming Bhutanese traditions at the airport after which the journey continues with a short drive and a 2-3 hour trek to reach the monastery.

Highest Elevation: 10,232 feet

Time: 5 to 7 hours for the entire visit

There are three paths leading to the holy place. The first being a trail passing through the pine forest and decorated with bright, prayer bannerettes symbolizing protection from evil forces, positive energy, vitality and good luck. The other two paths are pass through the plateau of a ‘hundred thousand fairies’.

How to have the best experience?

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Taktsang Monastery is from March to May and again from September to mid-November. This is when the weather is at its best with clear skies and a pleasant temperature.

How fit should one be: Anyone of average fitness can easily complete this hike within three to four hours. For a active and enthusiast trekker the hike may take up to only two hours.  For those who think this might be strenuous, one can also opt to ride a horse throughout the trail.

Photography: The best time to take the iconic image of Taktsang Monastery sitting the edge of the cliff is around midday. However, one will not be allowed to take their phones, camera or any other electronic devices inside the holy shine. One will also be asked to remove their shoes and buttoning up their coats to mark respect inside the monastery.

What else to carry: Comfortable hiking shoes, lots of water, a few snacks. There are cafeterias located near the monastery and easily accessible toilets along the way.
