The stairs from the passage lead underground to a massive complex housing the remains of ancient mummified Egyptians. Huge blocks of limestone were blocking the entrance to the chamber protecting any treasure and secrets that may be kept inside, and unlike any pyramid discovered thus far, it appeared to still be completely sealed. The Ministry of Antiques had also granted permission to archaeologists to raise the stones and to reveal what lies within the tomb. After three days of effort, all the stones were removed allowing the archaeologists access to the interior of the underground chamber. This was the first step towards revealing what lies below the surface for the first time in nearly 4000 years to the public. What was found inside the tomb was a surprise to people that we are still trying to determine to this present day. It was completely ransacked and disarrayed. The tomb had not been opened since the time of the mighty pharaohs, but it was in complete disarray. The archaeologists had hoped to find riches beyond their wildest imaginations, or secrets detailing untold stories of the ancient Egyptians, but instead, all they got was a mystery that needed solving immediately. 

This unusual situation brought up two questions that needed to be answered at once. The first question is who is buried in this remarkable underground pyramid. While it is unknown, and no mummies have been discovered in the depths of the pyramid, based on the structure and design, Mahmoud Afifi, the head of the Ministry of Antiques, has stated that it is most likely the first attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid. The second question is how an apparently undisturbed and sealed all entrances tomb, ended up looking completely ravaged from the inside. It is clear that the present-day explorers stumbled across some ancient crime scene. Someone must have arrived first and clearly looted the burial chamber. But who? 

To answer this question, we need to take a look at some of the hieroglyphics found within the chamber. The writing appears to include the name of the powerful pharaoh Ameny Qemau, who briefly ruled during the 13th dynasty around 1790 BC. This is unusual for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the pyramid has been dated between 2613 BC and 2589 BC which is a time period at least 800 years before the rule of Ameny Qemau. The second reason which makes this a confusing find is that pharaoh Ameny Qemau’s tomb was already discovered in 1957 in his very own pyramid. The Pharaoh Ameny Qemau is not a very well documented king, so we do not know if he was the type of ruler to cover up the past and bury secrets to preserve his legacy. As of today, the only records of him as a ruler are four canopic jars, as well as a few pieces of information regarding his powerful reign. 

He doesn’t appear in the Turin Royal Canon, a piece of papyrus from ancient times extensively documenting all pharaohs of ancient Egypt which is surprising, considering him to be a powerful Pharaoh.. This is likely due to his entire reign lasting less than two years during its peak. One possible explanation for how this is the case is that Ameny Qemau ordered the tomb to be defiled, erasing all evidence of the original pharaoh who lay there originally, and replacing the original inhabitant’s name with his own name. This was a common practice during ancient Egyptian times, where a pharaoh would send his slaves into a pyramid to bury all memories of a previous enemy or unpopular ruler to wipe out his legacy. Another piece of evidence that lends credence to this theory is that the hieroglyphics of Ameny Qemau’s name were carved into the already chiseled rock, making it more difficult to read, and showing that there is a high likelihood that it was not carved at the same time as everything else that was carved in the tomb. After this, Ameny Qemau could’ve had the pyramid resealed using the same techniques it was originally built with quite easily, giving it the appearance of being so supposedly undisturbed. So far, no further investigations have given any more light to the situation of who used to lay there previously, and that why Ameny Qemau might have chosen to erase all evidence of his predecessor’s existence. Abu Simbel: 

One of the grandest of the ancient temples of Egypt is the Abu Simbel twin temple. Located near Aswan, these temples date back to 1264 BC. They are part of the UNESCO heritage Nubian monuments and are famous mostly for their massive rock-relief sculptures of Ramesses II and his wife Nefertari. Abu Simbel is located quite far away from the mainland and especially Cairo but the journey to the complex is well worth the time. The temple was commissioned by Ramesses to showcase the might of the Nubian Egyptians among the North. There are also myths surrounding the place; it is said that the construction of the temple was done keeping in mind the alignment of the sun. Every year, the sun would align perfectly with the temple to shed light on the sculptures behind the statues of the king save for one idol: That of Ptah, the God of Death. 

Apart from the main temple, Abu Simbel also contains a smaller temple for Nefertari, the consort of the king. It is one of the few temples in Egypt that is dedicated to a queen or any sort of woman.    

Museum Of Antiquities

On your first visit to Egypt, you will be surprised to learn that most of the treasures that were originally in the pyramids are no longer there. While some of these valuables were looted by grave robbers, the majority of the contents of the pyramids and indeed a lot of Egyptian artifacts are in the possession of Egypt’s museums.

The Museum Of Antiquities, known simply as the Cairo Museum or the Egypt Museum is one of the most culturally rich museums in the world. Geography of Egypt – The land of Egypt consists of cycles, both in topography as well as in nature. The entire length of the country is a barren stretch of desert except for a stretch of green land which explodes through the region where there is the legendary Nile river as it flows through the entire length of the country. Each year, there would be a massive flood due to the melting snows in the far-off snow-heads which would lead to the overflowing water covering the land with rich black silt and making it extremely fertile. This was referred to as Kemet by the Egyptians. Known as the ‘black lands’ and contrasted this with the deshert or the ‘red lands’ of the arid and sterile desert. Early Development – Predynastic Period – ‘Pharaonic Egypt’ or ‘Dynastic Egypt’ which was the time when the whole country of Egypt was unified and ruled under one ruler began around 3100 B.C.E. The period before this unification, from 500 B.C.E. to 3100 B.C.E. is often referred to as Predynastic Egypt by scholars and historians. Prior to this, there were Neolithic and Paleolithic groups that were thriving in Egypt, stretching back to hundreds of thousands of years. These had descended from the Homo Erectus who had settled in the Nile valley. During this incredible Predynastic period, figurines, ceramics, mace heads, and other artifacts such as slate palettes which were used to grind pigments began to appear, and so did the imagery that became iconic during the pharaonic era. 

The civilization of ancient Egypt lasted for more than 3000 years and this civilization showed an incredible amount of continuity. While the Greco- Roman period is considered to be in the distant past today, in Queen Cleopatra the VII’s reign, (which ended in 30 BCE), is much closer to our time than the time of the construction of the Pyramids of Giza. Humans took more than 4000 years to build something nearly as big or taller than these structures. Remarkable, isn’t it?

Dynasties – The history of the Egyptians was referred to by themselves in relation to the ruler of their time. The years were recorded as regnal dates generally or in Latin, meaning kingdom or rule, of the ruling king and the numbers began anew with each new reign. The kings who came later recorded the names of their predecessors in vast lists known as the ‘kings lists’ on the walls of their temples and offered themselves as offerings to the rulers who had come and ruled before them. The temple of Seti I in Abydos is one of the best examples of such temples. 

The Pharaoh – Not just a King – The strong kings of ancient Egypt were extremely complex intermediaries that straddled between the terrestrial and the divine realms. They were obviously living humans but upon accession to the throne, they embodied the presence of divine kingship as well. The ka, or spirit, of kingship, was a completely separate identity standing beside the human ruler and apart from it. The divine aspect to the human ruler gave him the authority to rule over Egypt. The living king was associated with the virile, falcon-headed god Horus, who is believed to bestow the throne to the first human king of Egypt. If you are planning your Egypt vacation from India, then flights are the most hassle-free experience. Flights to Egypt are a regular affair with most major Indian carriers with stringent health protocols in place. Cairo is the main port of entry for flights and is the best place to start your Egypt trip as most monuments and sights of Egypt are within driving distance from Cairo. Sharm El Sheik International Airport is the other major airport in Egypt. 

For Indians travelling to Egypt, a tourist visa is required and must be applied for in advance, and a visa on arrival is not an option. The visa must also be applied for in-person and is valid for 90 days. The best way to obtain a visa is to contact the local consulate in Mumbai, although you may also ask us for assistance while we’re planning your Egypt vacation! 

Getting Around Egypt:

Egypt is well connected and has a long expansive road network. You can opt for a self-drive car at the airport or hire a luxury taxi to take you around the sights of Egypt but owing to the civil unrest and an uncertain hiring network in the different cities, it is usually safer to have a professional make the travel arrangements for you. Bus facilities are also available in most major towns and within Cairo by the Cairo Transport Authority. Of course, you can also opt for ferries and cruises on the Nile, a topic that we will get to later. Egypt also has a rail network between its cities, but it is not recommended to use the railways as they are outdated and generally considered a hindrance. In comparison, Egypt’s domestic airline carriers are low cost and get you to various cities much quicker. There are several connecting flights within all major cities of Egypt: Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh and more. The main carriers are Egyptair and Nile Air. 

What To See In Egypt: 

It’s no surprise that the very first item on any Egypt holiday’s list is a pyramid. Well, three. The Pyramids of Giza are the dream of every traveller at least once in life. Located a mere 13km from Cairo, the Giza Necropolis contains the three pyramids and the Great Sphinx. These hold some of the greatest secrets of the Old World, 4500 years old. The largest pyramid holds the sarcophagus and tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu and can be accessed through “robber’s doors” around the pyramids.

However, the pyramids are but one huge puzzle in Egypt’s history. Indeed the pyramids themselves are pretty hollowed out now, and the real treasures of Egypt are actually located within their museums. The Museum Of Antiquities contains actual relics from Egypt’s past and even a room with the actual mummified versions of Tutankhamun and Ramses, the great pharaohs. 

Recent discoveries in the past year have unearthed even more sarcophagi and tombs around the Giza pyramids. Containing mummified people who were buried over 2500 years ago during the Ptolemaic Dynasty, the same era as Cleopatra. These sarcophagi are located at Saqqara, not very far away from the Giza Necropolis. Some in almost pristine condition. One can only wonder as to how they managed to remain unnoticed all these years. One of the many mysteries you’ll be witness to on your future Egypt holiday.  

Want to explore the lifeline of Egypt? A luxury cruise down one of the world’s longest rivers is certainly the way to go. These serene, fresh waters nourish the banks of Egypt and make the entire land fertile. The banks of the Nile play host to various temples like the Kom Ombo, the only temple dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek which should give you an idea as to why it was built near a river. 

When it comes to river cruises, you have two options. You can take a conventional river cruise boat that is similar to cruise liners but smaller in size. These are a little more familiar and are for people who would like to socialize onboard during their river cruise. But for those that want a much more holistic Egypt experience, a Dahabiya is the way to go. These are traditional Egyptian sailing boats that were originally used to ferry the rich across the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. Today, they are coming back to life thanks to the locals. 

What To Eat In Egypt:

Egypt’s culinary delights include a mix of both seafood and meat, featuring contemporary Arabian cuisine. From Taameya on the streets of Alexandria and Cairo to fine dining at Le Meridien Pyramid, there is a choice of food for every kind of palate. Treat yourself to an Egyptian Mezze during lunch: A multicourse meal with small portions of Egyptian delicacies. The national dish of Egypt is a surprisingly wholesome food known as Koshary, a mix of rice, lentils, vegetables and meat. Baba Ghanoujh is a more popular dish, the familiar aubergine puree that goes extremely well with pita bread. One of the more unique dishes of Egypt is a preparation of the jute plant. Yes, the same plant from which we get jute fibre! Known as Molokhia this dish is a classic Egyptian dish owing to the abundance of jute in the region.

But don’t think Egypt has no choices for vegetarians. The bylanes around the souks can be filled with the aroma of charcoal-grilled meat on most days. Shawarma, a wrap with grilled meats and vegetables and dressing is an Egyptian street food special. For the adventurous, camel meat is another must-try when on an Egypt holiday. And for a quick bite en route your next destination, grab a hawawshi, a bread with minced meat and spices stuffed in it.  

Craving a sweet after a round of dining? Baklava is also quite common in Egypt. Let your senses be taken over by a decadent slice of Feteer, a layered pie made with flour, heaps of butter and sugar and nuts. And to finally wash all of that delicious food down, there’s always Egyptian Tea. Tea in Egypt is a mandatory accompaniment with almost every meal, in fact. Koshary tea is a staple of Egypt brewed with cane sugar and mint leaves. There’s also Hibiscus tea known as Karakade brewed with the petals of the flower.

Despite all the fears over civil unrest in Egypt, safety in the main cities is of minimal concern these days. Egyptians are extremely hospitable and you will have no trouble getting around town. Keeping to the well-lit areas of Egypt at night and respecting local customs ensures that your safety is also not compromised by accident. Follow general rules in special places like the pyramids (no videography is allowed inside the tombs for instance) and you should be okay!

The cruise takes you to visit a UNESCO world heritage site the following day, The Abu Simbel Temples. Built by the Egyptian king Ramses II during his reign, the temples were salvaged from the rising waters of the Nile River caused by the erection of the Aswan High Dam, utilizing a complex engineering feat in the 1960s.  The next stop would be the Temple of Kom Ombo, an unusual double temple, constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty. The building is unique because its double design meant that there were courts, halls, sanctuaries, and rooms duplicated for two sets of gods.

The following day, being day seven you will visit a Ptolemaic temple, built between 237 and 57 BC, one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Egypt, the EDFU temple. The temple was dedicated to Horus, the avenging son of Isis and Osiris. With its roof intact, it is also one of the most atmospheric of ancient buildings. The following day you will travel up to the city of Luxor, a city in Upper Egypt. What you must not miss while you’re here in the Valley of the Kings, the temples of Hatshepsut and Karnak, and the Colossi of Memnon. Each of which might just take you back in time! Travelling the backs of the River Nile in the far north of the country the city wears its history on its sleeve. From the Babylon fortress and Roman tower ruins built in 100 AD to the splendid mosques and museums, like the Al-Azhar Mosque built at the pinnacle of the Islamic empire.

On the southwestern edge of the city are the Pyramids of Giza, the oldest structures of all, dating back to the days of the Pharaohs, guided by the Sphinx and several camel drivers, the pyramids tower are the Cairo’s urban sprawl and the desert beyond.

It’s difficult to imagine an ancient sight, more iconic than the Pyramids of Giza.

The moment when you walk up and glance at the Pyramids for the first time, it will blow your mind away, with each huge block of limestone perfectly fitting into its neighboring stone. From seeing pictures of the Pyramids of Giza in post cards and magazines to actually be witnessing it live in all its glory, one is ought to feel like a small tiny creature standing in front of thousands of years of history and civilizations and dynasties.

The Sphinx, a proverbial treasure trove of esoteric history, guards the entrance to the Pyramids of Giza, which are possibly the oldest tourist attraction in the world.

Much like the Pyramids of Giza, the origin of the Sphinx remains pretty nebulous. Until the 19th century, the statue’s front arms lived deep beneath the walking surface of Giza. It wasn’t until the 1920s that the statue was fully excavated. The Sphinx is famously missing its nose, and an array of theories around the same are also circulated now and then.

The great Pyramids of Giza stood as the tallest man-made structure on earth for thousands of years and the questions of how, when and why these pyramids where built have shrouded them in mystery, opening the flood gates to countless conspiracy theories. Between its expansive mythology, nebulous origins, and alleged connections to worlds beyond our own, the Pyramids are the last remaining ancient wonders of the world. They may seem stranded in the middle of nowhere with miles and miles of sand surrounding them, modern-day Cairo has made the Pyramids just a short taxi ride from the city center. And it doesn’t cost more than eighty Egyptian pounds to go inside one of these and witness it in all its captivating glory.

However, today the pyramids feel empty and abandoned. But, in a land where time is measured by dynasties and distance by the setting of the sun, it’s best to take things slowly and let Egypt work its magic on you.
