About Seychelles 

These islands have an extremely vast and varied history. It was largely uninhabited (as far as we can tell) until the 15th century when several Arab and Eurasian traders visited the island. The earliest documented visit was in 1503 by a certain Spanish explorer known as Vasco Da Gama! Rather, a ship under his command known as The Ascension. These islands soon became an essential trading point between Asia and Africa. It was the French that officially took control of the islands in the 18th century. In fact, Seychelles gets its name from Jean Moreau De Sechelles, the then Finance Minister of France. Eventually, the British then took over the island operations and the islands were officially surrendered by France following the War Of The Coalitions. The nation finally became independent 2 centuries later in 1976 and Seychelles became a republic, and during this time became a hub for tourism with the opening of the international airport. 

COVID info 

While a trip to Seychelles is now certainly possible thanks to the travel bubble between India and Seychelles, there are certain regulations to be followed by travellers before arrival, upon arrival and during their stay in Seychelles. This Seychelles travel guide for 2021 also has some updated information about travelling in the travel bubble from India to Seychelles. 

1. It is preferable for all visitors to be vaccinated (at least two doses) before entering Seychelles and also procure a vaccination certificate.
2. All visitors are required to obtain a negative RT-PCR certificate regardless of their vaccinations.
3. You’ll also be required to obtain a Health Travel Authorisation (HTA) Certificate through the online portal here: https://seychelles.govtas.com/

Along with these, you of course also have to maintain social distancing and ideally visit places that are not too crowded which is, of course, an easy task considering how isolated and pristine these islands are! How to get there

Visa info: Indians luckily can avail a visa on arrival when visiting Seychelles, so you do not have to worry about immigration when planning your Seychelles trip in 2021. The visa lasts for 30 days. You will need to show your onward and return tickets at the counter along with your booking details which we will assist with.

Flights To Seychelles:  Most major cities have flights to Seychelles from India. There are two major airports in Seychelles, one in Mahe and one in Praslin. We recommend entry in Mahe as it makes getting around a bit easier since Mahe is a major city.

Areas of Seychelles

The islands here of course are the most coveted locations of Seychelles. 

You have Mahe, the capital. Mahe is home to more than just pristine beaches; visit here for a slice of Seychelles history. Visit the city of Victoria if you want to relax for a day or two exploring the markets and the local culture! 

Then there’s Praslin, the second biggest island. Home to the largest coconut in the world (and many other such unique oddities), hop on a private boat and visit Praslin and its tropical rainforests and isolated beaches. 

La Digue is the smallest of Seychelle’s populated islands. It has some of the most pristine waters of all the locations owing to its small population. You must not miss the Anse Source D’Argent beach here! 

Grande Soeur and Petite Soeur (Big sister and little sister) islands are home to an isolated ecosystem and are home to annual turtle nesting sites!

How to get to Ladakh –

By Road – Ladakh is at a distance of 434 kilometers from Srinagar and 494 kilometers from the town of Manali, and it is quite convenient to hire a cab or a jeep from either of the two cities. You can also book a seat and travel on the JKSRTC bus. If you are feeling adventurous, you can bike to Leh from Srinagar, Manali, or from Chandigarh itself. Winters might not be a good idea for this as the highways are shut due to heavy snowfalls and there are possibilities of landslides. If you do have to take the road, May to September is the ideal time to travel.

By Rail – You can take a train up to Jammu Tawi which lies at a distance of 700 kilometers from Ladakh from most of the major stations in India, such as Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai. From there you can hire a cab or once again, board a JKSRTC bus to travel further on.

By Air – Leh is the nearest airport and has good connectivity to Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh, and many other major major metro cities in India. From Leh, you can book yourself a cab to any of the places that you are interested in visiting or travel to your desired destination via a JKSRTC Bus.

The History of Ladakh – Has been a coveted land since time immemorial –

The Cultural Triangle – 

Towards the North of Kandy, the hill country tumbles down into the arid plains of the northern dry zone region. This area, known as the Cultural Triangle, was the location of Sri Lanka’s first great civilization, and its extraordinary scatter of ruined palaces, temples, and dagobas still give a compelling sense of this glorious past, amazing essence, and vibe. Foremost amongst these are the fascinating ruined cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the marvelous cave temples of Dambulla, the beautiful hilltop shrines and dagobas of Mihintale, and the extraordinary rock citadel of Sigiriya. One of Sri Lanka’s most popular and interesting nature reserves, Minneriya National Park, also lies within the region and on the migration route for the hundreds of elephants that migrate between various parks each year.

The East and the North –

The Gateway to the east is characterful of the war-torn, city of Trincomalee. The east’s huge swathe of the pristine coastline itself remains almost completely undeveloped, save for the sleepy villages of Nilaveli and Uppuveli, just north of Trinco, and the surfing center of Arugam Bay, at the eastern coast’s southern end. But the construction of a huge new resort at Passekudah is likely to change this fact. If you’re looking where to visit in Sri Lanka that’s even less visited, the north is slowly emerging after many years of civil war. Increasing numbers of visitors are making the long journey to the beautiful city of Jaffna, while a side-trip to remote Mannar, closer to India than Colombo, is another adventurous possibility for most tourists who are looking for some thrill.

Best time to travel to Sri Lanka – 

The climate is affected by two separate monsoons in the country of Sri Lanka, meaning you can usually dodge the rain when you travel to Sri Lanka, as it will probably be dry somewhere on the island. The east is a mirror image of the west: when the southwest or ‘Yala’ monsoon hits the west and southwest, from April or May to September, the sun is shining in the east and northeast and vice versa at the same time. However, the northeast or ‘Maha’ monsoon is generally lighter. In October and November, just before the ‘Maha’ monsoon, there is unsettled weather across the island all throughout. This means you might get caught in a downpour or thunderstorm wherever you are on the island. Bear in mind that there are variations in the general weather pattern, which means no two years are likely to be quite the same so it is quite unpredictable also. But it’s a pretty safe bet that temperatures will be more or less constant most of the time. You can rely on an average temperature of 26 degrees to 30 degrees celsius or higher on the coast and the lowlands, dropping the higher up you go. So if you’re heading to Kandy, you can expect temperatures of 18 degrees to 22 degrees celsius, but only 14 degrees to 16 degrees celsius in the hill country, such as Nuwara Eliya. And temperatures in the hills can drop to almost freezing cold at night, so you need to make sure that you pack your extra layers. Broadly speaking, in terms of the weather, the best time to visit the west and southwest of Sri Lanka, including the hill country, is the time period between December to March. If your itinerary is geared more towards the eastern side of the island, you’ll get the best conditions from the time period between April or May to September.

Festivals in Sri Lanka – 

When you visit Sri Lanka chances are there will be a festival in full swing or preparations for one will be underway during your stay in Sri Lanka. With four major religions coexisting on the island, each with its own calendar of festivals, as well as many public holidays, these events can be extremely hard to avoid and you should not avoid them as well, otherwise, you would be missing something really amazing. Dates vary according to the Lunar calendar, but usually, the festival takes place in late July or August every year.

Getting Around in Sri Lanka – 

Getting around by bus – As a rule of thumb, the buses in Sri Lanka are generally faster than trains for traveling around the island nation and its cities, and a cheap way to get around. It’s the main means of transport, getting into those hard to reach corners of the island, although it can be a bit of a rough ride, with drivers careering around corners and the older buses giving a bit of a bone-shaking experience at riveting driving speeds.

Getting Around by Train – Going by train is more relaxed and can be a great way to take in the landscape, especially on the marvelous intercity services on the hill country route from Colombo to Kandy and Badulla. These have a special carriage, or observation car, with large panoramic windows offering 360-degree views of the incredible landscapes of this beautiful island nation. Improvements have been made on the rail network across the island and intercity lines have more comfortable air-conditioned carriages. But getting around the hill country is still painfully slow and time-consuming.

Getting around by domestic plane – Domestic air services provide a superfast alternative to long journeys by road or rail and are memorable in their own right, with frequently beautiful views of the island from the sky above.

Getting around by auto-rickshaws – Rickshaws are a convenient and fun way to travel short distances in Sri Lanka, although journeys can be rather hair raising, as the rickshaw drivers feel they are roadside Michael Schumacher’s and the way they dodge in and out of fast-moving traffic is hair bending. Make sure you set a fare with the driver before you set off otherwise don’t be surprised if the fare turns out to be remarkably high at the end of the trip.

The stairs from the passage lead underground to a massive complex housing the remains of ancient mummified Egyptians. Huge blocks of limestone were blocking the entrance to the chamber protecting any treasure and secrets that may be kept inside, and unlike any pyramid discovered thus far, it appeared to still be completely sealed. The Ministry of Antiques had also granted permission to archaeologists to raise the stones and to reveal what lies within the tomb. After three days of effort, all the stones were removed allowing the archaeologists access to the interior of the underground chamber. This was the first step towards revealing what lies below the surface for the first time in nearly 4000 years to the public. What was found inside the tomb was a surprise to people that we are still trying to determine to this present day. It was completely ransacked and disarrayed. The tomb had not been opened since the time of the mighty pharaohs, but it was in complete disarray. The archaeologists had hoped to find riches beyond their wildest imaginations, or secrets detailing untold stories of the ancient Egyptians, but instead, all they got was a mystery that needed solving immediately. 

This unusual situation brought up two questions that needed to be answered at once. The first question is who is buried in this remarkable underground pyramid. While it is unknown, and no mummies have been discovered in the depths of the pyramid, based on the structure and design, Mahmoud Afifi, the head of the Ministry of Antiques, has stated that it is most likely the first attempt at a smooth-sided pyramid. The second question is how an apparently undisturbed and sealed all entrances tomb, ended up looking completely ravaged from the inside. It is clear that the present-day explorers stumbled across some ancient crime scene. Someone must have arrived first and clearly looted the burial chamber. But who? 

To answer this question, we need to take a look at some of the hieroglyphics found within the chamber. The writing appears to include the name of the powerful pharaoh Ameny Qemau, who briefly ruled during the 13th dynasty around 1790 BC. This is unusual for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that the pyramid has been dated between 2613 BC and 2589 BC which is a time period at least 800 years before the rule of Ameny Qemau. The second reason which makes this a confusing find is that pharaoh Ameny Qemau’s tomb was already discovered in 1957 in his very own pyramid. The Pharaoh Ameny Qemau is not a very well documented king, so we do not know if he was the type of ruler to cover up the past and bury secrets to preserve his legacy. As of today, the only records of him as a ruler are four canopic jars, as well as a few pieces of information regarding his powerful reign. 

He doesn’t appear in the Turin Royal Canon, a piece of papyrus from ancient times extensively documenting all pharaohs of ancient Egypt which is surprising, considering him to be a powerful Pharaoh.. This is likely due to his entire reign lasting less than two years during its peak. One possible explanation for how this is the case is that Ameny Qemau ordered the tomb to be defiled, erasing all evidence of the original pharaoh who lay there originally, and replacing the original inhabitant’s name with his own name. This was a common practice during ancient Egyptian times, where a pharaoh would send his slaves into a pyramid to bury all memories of a previous enemy or unpopular ruler to wipe out his legacy. Another piece of evidence that lends credence to this theory is that the hieroglyphics of Ameny Qemau’s name were carved into the already chiseled rock, making it more difficult to read, and showing that there is a high likelihood that it was not carved at the same time as everything else that was carved in the tomb. After this, Ameny Qemau could’ve had the pyramid resealed using the same techniques it was originally built with quite easily, giving it the appearance of being so supposedly undisturbed. So far, no further investigations have given any more light to the situation of who used to lay there previously, and that why Ameny Qemau might have chosen to erase all evidence of his predecessor’s existence. Best Time To Visit – Oman’s weather is typical of the Arabian peninsula, with scorchingly hot summers from April to September and pleasantly temperate winters from October to March.
