How to get to Ladakh –

By Road – Ladakh is at a distance of 434 kilometers from Srinagar and 494 kilometers from the town of Manali, and it is quite convenient to hire a cab or a jeep from either of the two cities. You can also book a seat and travel on the JKSRTC bus. If you are feeling adventurous, you can bike to Leh from Srinagar, Manali, or from Chandigarh itself. Winters might not be a good idea for this as the highways are shut due to heavy snowfalls and there are possibilities of landslides. If you do have to take the road, May to September is the ideal time to travel.

By Rail – You can take a train up to Jammu Tawi which lies at a distance of 700 kilometers from Ladakh from most of the major stations in India, such as Delhi, Kolkata or Mumbai. From there you can hire a cab or once again, board a JKSRTC bus to travel further on.

By Air – Leh is the nearest airport and has good connectivity to Delhi, Jammu, Srinagar, Chandigarh, and many other major major metro cities in India. From Leh, you can book yourself a cab to any of the places that you are interested in visiting or travel to your desired destination via a JKSRTC Bus.

The History of Ladakh – Has been a coveted land since time immemorial –

The walls of caves in Ladakh tell stories from Neolithic times when man first made an appearance on planet earth. When we shift to many years later and the people here find a mention in India’s ancient scriptures, the Puranas. Such is the history of this ancient land.

Ladakh enjoys very close proximity to Tibet and has always been predominantly Buddhist, later giving way to Islam after repeated Islamic invasion. About The Andamans:

Because this archipelago is distanced from the mainland and it was initially difficult to gather information as to the origins of the islands, the Andamans remain a mystery. The indigenous populations of the Andaman are said to be as old as 30,000 years, dating back to the middle paleolithic ages. Getting To Andaman:

For Indian Nationals flying to Andaman, a passport is not required although we do recommend you get yours as it makes ID and check-ins a lot easier compared to carrying a local ID. Foreigners are required to carry their passport and a valid India Visa. 

Given the coronavirus pandemic, Andaman had initially shut down travel to the islands but is now opening up flight and border restrictions for tourists. However, all tourists are required to submit a negative COVID report that was taken less than 72 hours before the flight along with a health undertaking. When it comes to what mode of transport to choose, there are two main ways to get to the Andamans. The main port of entry is usually Port Blair for a lot of travelers as it is connected by both air and sea. The major transit hub for visiting places in Arunachal would be Itanagar, around 400km from Guwahati. Roads in Arunachal are mixed, with good and bad stretches everywhere. Meghalaya:

Meghalaya is also one of the wettest places on Earth owing to its lush vegetation and rolling hills that trap the Northeast monsoon every year. The state is home mainly to the Garo and Khasi populations, indigenous groups that have been around for centuries.

Shillong is the major transit point for Meghalaya. It is well connected via roads; a drive from Delhi should take about 30 hours although there will certainly be bad patches of roads in Meghalaya thanks to the mountains giving way to the occasional landslide. There is also local train connectivity from Assam. 

Meghalaya is where almost nothing has been ravaged by urbanization. The famed living root bridges of Meghalaya are a testament to this. Having been created centuries ago, these bridges made from the roots of living rubber trees continue to be a vital part of Meghalaya’s local communities in the villages of Nongriat and Mawlynnong or Cherrapunjee. Waterfalls are also plentiful in Meghalaya thanks to its climate. Therefore, the number of places to see in Meghalaya are innumerable. Exploring the towns of Shillong and Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth is also a great way to imbibe local culture. 

Nagaland:

Land of the famed Nagas. Bordering Myanmar on one side and hugging Arunachal and Assam on the other is this quaint state that is home to around 14 different tribal groups. Nagaland is raw, untouched and distinct from the other states of the Northeast. Nagaland is also famous for its Hornbill festival and wide Christian population.

You may choose to fly in from Guwahati to Dimapur, 75km from Nagaland, although you will only get small charter flights. Dimapur is also the nearest train station to Nagaland so plan travels accordingly.  

The villages of Kohima and Kisama are your ultimate gateway to Naga culture with most of the inhabitants of these villages living the way their ancestors used to live. Mon district is also a noteworthy district that serves as a base for many tribal settlements. 

Sikkim:

The latest entrant to the band of sisters, Sikkim is a tiny state with great treasures, similar to Meghalaya in that sense. It is home to Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world. It is one of the more remote states of the Northeast and lies to the south of Tibet. The name “Sikkim” translates into “happy land”, a name given by its original inhabitants, the Limbus.

Getting to Sikkim is a tricky proposition; one can take a flight from Siliguri in West Bengal to Bagdogra, the capital region of Sikkim. Bagdogra is also the major transit point for road and rail connectivity although both of these are rudimentary and time killers, so we recommend sticking to airways in this travel guide to northeast India.

We begin our journey in the south of India, in Karnataka state, close to the Western Ghats. Kabini is the backwaters that lie adjacent to the Nagarhole National Park (or the erstwhile Rajiv Gandhi National Park). Spread over 55 hectares of prime tropical dry deciduous forests, Kabini is a haven for multiple species of wildlife but is a special place mainly for its tigers. Nearly 200 individuals claim Kabini as their own. Some of the most famous sightings and conservation efforts have taken place in this landscape, and it shows. The tigers also share the space with nearly 100 leopards and a wide density of other large mammals.
Kabini is also the perfect jungle destination since there is an adequate number of resorts and stays close to the backwaters.

A more familiar name to some of you reading this. Ranthambore is undoubtedly India’s star jewel for when it comes to tiger sightings or national parks in general. Today, it is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot by the government of India and was a key part of Project Tiger in its days. The ancient walls of Sawai Madhopur, the towering fortress that is the centre of attention around the area, is also home to a number of tigers. Ranthambore was also home to one of the world’s most influential tigresses, Machhali, the queen of Ranthambore. While she has moved on since her legacy in the form of her cubs and their cubs has passed on, and Ranthambore is home to nearly 50 individuals.

The oldest, and possibly the most renowned national park in India, Jimm Corbet is what started it all. The very first area that was under the purview of Project Tiger. Corbett National Park is, of course, named after the legendary hunter-conservationist Jim Corbett, a man whose legacy is known amongst most people in India, even if in passing. The Garhwal region, in fact, has been home to many a man-eater that was dispatched by Jim, eventually.
Being nestled among the lower Himalayas means that Corbett has some of the most unique flora and fauna of the country, with multiple climate zones and seasons. However, the tiger is ever-present here too: In fact, Corbett is home to the highest density of tigers in the country, with nearly 300 individuals as per the 2018 census.

Throughout India’s Wildlife, the Tiger has been an omnipresent entity, be it religious sentiment, environmental consciousness or simply as an ecotourism draw. Other big cats followed too, of course, such as Ladakh’s enigmatic snow leopard, or the panther of the plains.
However these cats, and indeed, much of India’s megafauna, are but a small piece of the puzzle that is Indian biodiversity. With some of the most fertile regions in the world, and at least 2 or 3 new species of wildlife being discovered every year, this resplendent country has a lot more to offer.

For the more ornithologically inclined, India is second to none. With nearly 1500 species and counting, India’s avifauna is beautiful, varied and charismatic. From the Pale Billed Flowerpecker, the smallest bird that’s the size of a thumb, to the great Griffons of the Himalayas, whose wingspans can reach 10ft in length. India also has a large selection of endemic birds; species that cannot be found anywhere else. Great Pied Hornbills that soar across the canopy to forage for figs, or the Malabar Whistling Thrush, whose call sounds melodious but alarmingly human, and so many more.
And the hotspots? The lush, towering western ghats, or the marshlands of central India, or the hills of the Northeast. Even India’s urban spaces have recorded nearly 200 species of birds throughout the year.

India does not lack when it comes to its cold-blooded friends either. The country is home to nearly 610 species of reptiles, including 270 species of snakes, 200 odd species of lizards, 34 species of turtles and much more. The most enigmatic of these, the King Cobra, lives mainly in lush evergreen vegetation: The Western Ghats in the South, and the 7 Sisters of the Northeast. Apart from the King, India also lives with the Big 4: Venomous Snakes that are common throughout the country. Monitor Lizards are a flagship species as well, being much more distributed across the country.
However, one of India’s star reptile attractions is the turtle. Olive Ridley turtles come to nest on India’s coasts every year, taking part in an “arribada”, an ancient nesting ritual where they lay their eggs on the shore and depart, leaving the young ones to hatch and rush to the sea by themselves.
